Other IO Performance Recommendations

  • Always have the goal in mind to configure your disks to maximize data transfer.  Some examples:  data and log file segregation, tempdb segregation and optimization, do NOT use autogrow/autoshrink.
  • Don't store any other files on a volume containing SQL data files.  You really don't want the fragmentation.
  • If recycling a volume that was used for other files and now for SQL files, run defrag first
  • Turn off 8.3 file name generation for NTFS.  fsutil can do this for you.  This is a huge benefit on volumes using FILESTREAM or where new files are created/updated frequently.
  • Turn off last access time tracking using fsutil.
